In the early days of the internet, domain names were fairly easy to come by. There were so many good names still available, but as more and more businesses migrated to the internet, the best names were taken. As time passed, finding a good domain name to register has become increasingly difficult.

Why is a domain name so important? For one thing, a domain name can help you to get traffic to your website. If you don't get traffic, you might as well not even have a website. There's no doubt about it, if you want to make money, you need traffic.

Personally, I don't think this is too much of a problem, since most people find websites thru search engines, so they'll be clicking directly on a link to your website instead of typing it in by hand.

Again, it's really important to embed keywords about your business into your domain name for good search engine ranking. Although some domains, like ebay.com or google.com do get a lot of traffic, it's not because of any keyword in the domain name. What is an 'ebay' anyhow?

You'll find that most of the high traffic websites with short, unrelated domain names get their huge amount of traffic thru paid promotional campaigns. They use radio & TV ads, high volume email advertising and other such methods that might be too expensive for a small business just getting started.

A good way to find your domain name is to develop a list of keywords that are strongly associated with your business. Write down as many keywords as you can think of, as long as they're on your subject. Once you have your list, you can use one of the several free online tools to help select just the right domain name for your new website.

(1) Choose an easy to spell domain name.

It does no good to have a website, if no one can find you because your domain name is too difficult to spell.

Last week I was talking to someone and asked her who the company was that designed her website. She told me the name of the company, and it was some very strange name that didn't make sense to me. I had to ask her twice what the name was and I then asked her to spell it for me. Unfortunately, she couldn't even spell the name because she said the company had a strange spelling, and she could never remember it. I then asked her for the website address, and she couldn't remember how to spell that either. I ended up trying to guess a couple different spellings for the website and never did find the company.

Don't get cute with your website name or for that matter, the name of your business. You may think it's clever to spell fenikz instead of Phoenix, but don't expect anyone to find your website.

I speak from experience on this topic. When I first started my business I was completely ignorant about choosing a business name. I thought it would be fun to have a business name that was a play on words. So I chose "Howe Write You Are Business Communications." My last name is Howe, and I am a writer. So I chose the domain name howewriteyouare.com.

When I would tell people my domain name, this is what they heard: howrightyouare.com. They spelled the domain name exactly as they heard it and the only way they would get the correct spelling is by looking at my business card. I soon figured out what a dumb mistake I made and changed my business name after the first year.

(2) Choose the right extension for your domain name.

When you go to register a domain name you have a choice of .com, .net, .org, .biz, and some other rarely used extensions. Unless you are a nonprofit, only choose a .com extension for your domain name.

The reasons for this are very simple. When people go to search for a website, they assume it is a .com. If you have any other extension, they will end up at the wrong website.

The other reason to have a .com extension is that search engines will search first for a .com website. For example, a browser will look for quiltingtips.com before, it looks for quiltingtips.net.

Let me talk a moment about strategy when it comes to choosing a domain name extension. If you don't want a competitor to have your domain name, then purchase all the extensions of your domain name. In other words, if my domain name was going to be quiltingtips.com, I might also purchase quiltingtips.net, quiltingtips.org, and quiltingtips.biz. This way, I insure that my business domain name will not have competition from a nearly identical domain name.

(3) Choose misspelled domain names.

If you have a business name that you know is easy to misspell, consider purchasing the domain name with the common misspelling. Both names can be set up to point to your website, so it doesn't matter if your domain name is misspelled, people will still find you.

In my previous example, I talked about my original business name and the problems that I had with the unusual spelling of my business name. If I had not wanted to change my business name, a simple solution for me would have been to purchase the domain name howrightyouare.com and have that point to my website.

An example of a well-known business that is using this technique is Verisign. If you type in verasign.com or verisign.com you will get to the correct website.

Conclusion Your domain name is your Internet identity. Make sure your domain name selection is not an afterthought. Take the time to thoroughly analyze your options and choose a domain name that promotes your business or product online.

Registering a domain name is one of the two tasks that you will have to undertake before even building your website. The other process is obtaining hosting for your site.

A domain name makes up part of the address of your site and can have many endings, such as .com, .net, .co.uk, .info, .org and many many more.

Choosing a Domain Name

Obviously the type of name you wish to register will depend largely upon the purpose of your site. For example if you are publishing a slideshow of photos for your relatives to view oversees then a domain name something like "yourname.com" or "yourname.co.uk" will work well for you.

On the other hand, if you are designing a site to attract anonymous visitors either as a hobby or because you a running a business then something more catchy and descriptive will be needed.

When registering your domain name you have the option of using up to 63 characters. However just because you CAN do something does not mean you HAVE to. In most cases a shorter name will be more easily remembered by your visitors.

If your website is to be used for commercial activity and you are, or will be, generating a vast amount of traffic to your site then you will become greatly recognised - well done, but be aware that this may well generate copycats who will try and cash in on your traffic. These people will attempt to "steal" your customers by using domain names that are very similar to yours. For example you own we-are-millionaires.com and the copycats will take we-are-millionaires.net, .co.uk, .org, etc. Therefore, if you are making good money, I would suggest investing some of this in registering all the extensions that are available (.net, .org, etc) in order to protect your interests. 1) Use the .COM extension. This is still the number one choice for the majority of online businesses. Also, because we are creatures of habit many people automatically include .COM when typing in almost any web address, so why not capitalize on human nature?

For many webmasters, domain names (.com, .net, .org, etc) are an afterthought. This is unfortunate; however, as a good domain name (or the lack of one) can make a huge difference to your online success. First of all, I want to stress the importance of actually buying a domain name. You can register a domain for less than $10 per year and they add immediate value to your website, even if it's just a simple blog.

Why spend $10 per year on your own domain name? First of all, it makes you look really intelligent and technologically savvy. Furthermore, and most importantly, it gives your visitors an easy way to remember where your website is located. This leads to my first crucial tip: choose a domain name that is easy to remember and hard to misspell. I almost always use .com names (unless I have a very good reason not to, like the website is geographically centered, in that case one might use .us or .ca or whatever) because most internet users remember .com far better than .net or .org. Even myself, as an experienced webmaster, often mistype .net websites, replacing the domain extension with .com.

Whenever possible, try to include keywords related to your sites content in the domain, but don't be overly worried if this isn't a viable option and you can't find any decent domains that meet this criteria. In addition, try not to use hyphens (dashes) in your domains as they also make them harder to remember. Numbers and misspelled words (kewl, linkz, etc) are also obvious problems to avoid. Remember, names like Google.com and Yahoo.com meant little or nothing when they were first registered. It was the content of those sites which made them popular and the simplicity of the domain names made them easy to brand and remember. I don't think Google would be where it's at today if it was called Kewl-Search273.org.

When you finally choose the best available domain name(s) to use, I recommend using either Moniker.com or GoDaddy.com to register your name(s). They are both reliable, easy to use, offer fair pricing and services and have decent technical support. Keep your domain names short, simple and to the point. It might take a dozen hours of thinking and searching to find the right one, but a good domain name is worth its weight in gold. In my next domaining article I'll discuss other, more advanced, methods of valuing and acquiring domain names. Until then, remember my simple tips in this article and you wont go wrong.

Host Domains
The first (top) host_domain setting found in the dmail.conf file specifies the 'main domain' of the server.

This is the most important setting in your dmail.conf configuration file.

This domain should be what the outside work knows your domain as,
e.g. for us, our domain is netwinsite.com so on our server we have set,
host_domain netwinsite.com

Your first host_domain therefore must be resolvable to an IP address if you are using DSMTP on the internet rather than on an intranet. It is often the A Name in your DNS record.

NB: your first host_domain setting should almost never be your machine name, e.g. do not make your first host_domain setting any of the following,
host_domain mail1.domain.com (bad - do not use as first host_domain)
host_domain smtp.domain.com (bad - do not use as first host_domain)

You can set multiple host_domain settings.

The second, third, fourth ... settings are all 'domain aliases' of your main domain. So you can enter your machine name as one of the lower host_domain settings. Because the domains are aliases, a particular username points to the same user on all of the domains,e.g.,
bob@host_domain1
bob@host_domain2
bob@host_domain3
are all the same user, as host_domain1, host_domain2 and host_domain3 are all aliases of each other.

NB: if you add a host_domain setting then in most cases you should ensure that you have also added a DNS entry for that domain to the Internet DNS server system, i.e. your own DNS server or your ISP's DNS server. See the Domain Name Resolution (DNS) section towards the end of this page for details.

The whole of the DMail server is based around the email address domain.

All you have to do is tell the DMail servers which email domain or domains you want it to recognize as being 'local'.

You do this by using two settings - host_domain and vdomain in The configuration file - dmail.conf.

If you want to support just one domain, use a host_domain setting.

If you want to support multiple domains, use a host_domain setting plus a number of vdomain settings.

If you are planning to add many domains, we suggest that you pick one of these domains to be your 'main' domain.

Use DMSetup to add only this domain and get it working so that you can send and receive email. Only then should you set about adding the other domains.

The other domains that you add are refered to in this manual as 'virtual domains', although there is very little difference between them and your main domain.

NB: if you don't tell DMail about a domain with a host_domain or vdomain setting then the SMTP server DSMTP will think that that domain is not 'local', and try to send on or 'relay' that mail to an outside world server.

Virtual Domains
Virtual domains allow you to provide email server support for several distinct groups of users who collect their email from supposedly different mail servers.

Such users typically have different domain information in their email address, e.g one group have addresses on the domain, domain1.com and another group have addresses on domain2.com.

DSMTP accomodates these groups by dividing them based on their domain.

The first domain that you set up should be thought of as your 'main domain'.

So you pick one of your domains that is going to be the default, and call that the main domain. Referring to the section above, you add a host_domain setting for it. Then all of the other domains that you add will be virtual domains.

Note: there isn't really any difference between a main domain and a virtual domain, except for how you tell DMail about them.

( Repeating our message from the overview ...

The setup program DMSetup will only ask you about one domain, so forget about the virtual domains until you have your first main domain set up and tested, i.e. so that you can send and receive mail. Then set about adding the other domains, with the vdomain configuration file setting. )

The biggest difficulty for virtual domains is the POP server login usernames. For example, there may be two distinct users, both with username fred. Let us call them fred1 and fred2

Fred1 has the email address, fred@domain1.com
Fred2 has the email address, fred@domain2.com
The DPOP server has to have a method to tell these two users apart when they login, as presumably they both want the login username of simply 'fred'.

DMail provides two ways to do this,

IP Address based domains:
Pop users on each domain login to a different IP Address.

So, for example, fred@domain1.com might login to ip address 1.1.1.1 with username fred and fred@domain2.com might login to ip address 1.1.1.2 also with username fred.

Suffix based domains:
Pop users on each domain login with a different suffix to their username.

For example, fred@domain1.com logs on to any IP Address with the username,
fred
and fred@domain2.com logs on to any IP Address with the username,
fred@domain2.com

A third method also exists, where every login username is unique and you use aliases or a lookup table to create mail addresses. This method is common in products like Sendmail, but it is not recommended by us. See the section
Unique Usernames Method for Semi Virtual Domains for details.

So how do you add a virtual domain . . .?

You need to manually add (or use the windows GUI DMAdmin) the virtual domains to the configuration file, dmail.conf - see The Configuration File for how to locate and edit this file. Both domain1.com and domain2.com point to a single machine with multiple IP numbers running one copy of DPOP. In order to handle these two 'virtual-domains' and not mix up fred1 and fred2, even though they have the same username, DPOP must keep them separate. When a connection is made to DPOP, it checks the IP number that the connection was made to. This is then matched against entries in the dmail.conf file of the form;

vdomain Btwo 161.33.44.55 mail.domain.one /var/spool/mail/B
vdomain C 222.33.44.22 mail.domain.two /var/spool/mail/domaintwo

The entries in these virtual domain lines are as follows:

vdomain <1> <2> <3> <4>

Prefix string used to identify this domain (by default prepended to drop file name)
IP number users reading from this domain will connect to
domain name which translates to number in part 2 above
path for drop files for users of this domain.
These are used to enable the username passed to the authentication process to contain enough information to allow the two users to be distinguished and assigned different drop file paths and passwords.
From the above, it might appear that virtual domains can only be supported when an external authentication process is used, as two different passwords for user fred are required. This is not the case, as virtual domains can also be supported using normal UNIX user/passwords or Windows passwords by using the following scheme:

User fred from domain one is 'known' by the DMail servers as A_fred and user fred from domain B is known as B_fred. So their drop files will be a_fred and b_fred respectively (if drop_prefix is true, which is the default) and their user database names will also be a_fred and b_fred.
The usernames and uid's use the form A_fred and B_fred in order to keep them separate.

The user does not need to change their email client login username settings, as the translation from fred to A_fred is done by DPOP. The vdomain prefix can be a string rather than a single letter, e.g. 'domaina'.

Connections to IP numbers not listed in vdomain settings, but listed in host_domain settings will use the normal drop_path form and will have normal usernames, dropfile and binfile names.
The drop file path for for each virtual domain is specified in the vdomain setting
If a bin path has been specified for bin files then this is used for all domains, BUT a prefix of A_ B_ etc. is used to distinguish files for users from different virtual domains (If drop_prefix is true, which is the default).
If bin files are stored in the same place as drop files then the drop paths from vdomain settings are used.

Basically, in order to add a virtual domain domain2.com which has IP address 1.1.1.2, you should add a line like,

vdomain dom2 1.1.1.2 domain2.com c:\dmail\in\domain2

In the line above I have chosen a vdomain 'prefix' of dom2. This prefix is used by DMail to refer to users of this domain, so the user bob from the domain, domain2 is referred to by DMail as dom2_bob - never to his face, only when it is talking to the authentication programs (a system one or an external one).

The last entry on the line is the path for mail drop files to go for that domain - so that you can keep the mail for each domain separate.

You should notice that all of the entries in the vdomain line, except for the vdomain prefix, are already in your dmail.conf file for your main domain - e.g. the main domain has a setting called drop_path. Note: the main domain does not have a prefix, as usernames without a prefix in your password list are assumed to be for the main domain.

So, to add a user bob to your main domain, you simply add the user 'bob' to your authentication database, and to add a user bob to the domain domain2 above you add a user 'dom2_bob' to your authentication database.

As an alternative to having multiple IP numbers, virtual domains can be set up by asking users of the virtual domain to connect to the POP server with a suffix on the end of their username. E.g. using POP login usernames of the form,
fred/jds

To make a virtual domain a 'suffix based vdomain', you add a vdomain line to dmail.conf as with an IP based vdomain, but replace the IP Address with the unique suffix for that domain.

For example, we might have:

vdomain johns /jds johns.server.com /var/spool/mail/johnsusers
where '/jds' is the suffix.

If DPOP finds this suffix on any user POP login name, it will remove the suffix and treat the user as belonging to the vdomain of the vdomain line that it matches.

DPOP will do this no matter what IP address the user connects to.

See IP Address based virtual domains for explanations of the other values of the vdomain setting beside the suffix.

Note: the suffix includes any separator character, in the example above it was '/'.

Making suffixes more convenient:

Obviously, this form of virtual domains can be an inconvenience to users if they have to change their client software settings to connect as 'username_suffix' instead of just 'username'. It can also be a little confusing to customers.

1. One common way to get around this is to make the suffix, '@domain' so that the user can use their email address as their POP login, e.g. if we changed the vdomain line above to,

vdomain johns @johns.server.com johns.server.com /var/spool/mail/johnsusers
Then the suffix is now, '@johns.server.com', so the user fred would login to the POP server with,
fred@johns.server.com

NB: The only problem with this is that some email clients won't let you enter a username with an @ in it. The notable example is Netscape Mail, although the word is that they have realised their mistake and will change that in an upcoming version.

We have just been given instructions on how to allow the @ character to be used in netscape.
1. Close Netscape

2. Another common way to make suffixes more 'transparent' is to hide them all together. If you are using any of our Web to EMail gateway products like CWMail or WebMail, they have an ini setting called 'suffix'. You can use that setting to make them automatically add the suffix to the username given by the user on login. So if the user always collects their mail with the web interface, they don't ever need to know about the suffix.

We recommend the use of suffix based vdomains when using the web interfaces.

Remember that whether a vdomain is IP address based or suffix based, the form of the username in the database is independent. So you can easily change a domain from one to another at a later date. For some changes you would need to alter your DNS entries as well.

Cognitive Domain

The cognitive domain is knowledge or mind based. It has three practical instructional levels including fact, understanding, and application. The fact level is a single concept and uses verbs like define, identify, and list. The understanding level puts two or more concepts together. Typical verbs for this level include describe, compare andcontrast. The application level puts two or more concepts together to form something new. Typical verbs at this level include explain, apply, and analyze. Delivery in this domain is typically a lecture/presentation and the evaluation will be subjective and objective test items.

Psychomotor Domain

The psychomotor domain is skill based. The student will produce a product. The three practical instructional levels include imitation, practice, and habit. The psychomotor domain is steeped in a demonstrationdelivery and the first level, imitation, will simply be a return of the demonstration under the watchful eye of the instructor. The practice level will be a proficiency building experience that may be conducted by the student without direct oversight of the instructor. The habit level is reached when the student can perform the skill in twice the time that it takes the instructor or an expert to perform. The content that is needed to be known to do the skill is cognitive and should be treated accordingly.

Are you going to grade the activity in some way other than a paper/pencil test?

Affective Domain

The affective domain is based upon behavioral aspects and may be labeled as beliefs. The three levels in the domain are awareness, distinction, and integration. The verbs for this domain are generally limited to words like display, exhibit, and accept and these apply at all levels. The first two levels are really cognitive; integration is behavioral and requires the learner to evaluate and synthesize. The content in this domain will usually involve discussions. The testing in the first two levels will be cognitive, whereas the third level will require an affective checklist.

What is a Domain Name?
In simple terms, a domain name is a human-language equivalent of an address on the Internet. The name actually translates to a number, or more correctly a series of numbers, roughly comparable to a telephone number. Like a telephone number, an Internet address is unique, that is to say, no two are the same. And like a telephone number, it serves to connect "callers" to one specific place on the Net.
There are advantages to using names instead of just the numbers alone. The most obvious is that people can more easily recognize and remember a meaningful word than a long string of numerals.

Another, major advantage is that a domain can be moved to a new machine, where it will have a new number, but the name will remain the same. The DNS (Domain Name System) records are simply altered to reflect the change, and access to the domain continues unchanged.

An Internet domain may be the "home" for any number of things: web sites, mailboxes, files for downloading, even entire computer networks. You see domain names as part of practically every Internet address. In the e-mail address info@domains.org (a mailbox), the domain name is domains.org. In the Web address http://www.lycos.com (a web page), the domain name is lycos.com.

Occasionally, you will see the numeric address instead of the domain name. http://206.184.226.167/basics.html is a perfectly serviceable address for this web page you're reading.

That number is called an IP Address, meaning Internet Protocol address. Internet Protocol is a standard for network communications, which is used throughout Net.

It is sometimes useful to match up a domain name with its IP Address, or vice-versa. This is commonly done with a utility called "nslookup". There are many nslookup "gateways" scattered around the Web. The list below points to some of them.

Now we'll examine the name itself. Domain names have at least two parts, separated by a dot or period.

The part after the dot is called the Top Level Domain (TLD). The Top Level Domain serves to broadly categorize the name as to its type or purpose. Common TLDs include .com (commercial), .org (organization), .edu (educational institutions), .net (networks), .gov (U.S. government)and .mil (U.S. military).

There are also hundreds of country TLDs, such as .us (USA), .fr (France), .de (Germany), etc. These are in more general use outside the US.

Additional "generic" TLDs (gTLDs) have been proposed and will probably come into general use by sometime in 1988. Domain names ending in .firm, .store, .web, .arts, .rec, .info, .nom and possibly many others will become widespread on the Net.

Addresses ending in .com are by far the most common at present; they're generally intended to be commercial in nature, although at present the .com TLD actually serves as a catch-all for virtually all domain names that don't fit the other, more specific TLDs.

The part of the domain name before the dot is the Second Level Domain (SLD). If you're registering a name, you have considerable freedom of choice in what this will be. So long as the name you choose does not already exist under the same TLD, and is not obviously a famous trademark owned by someone else, its registration is generally allowed. An SLD can contain up to 24 characters: letters, numbers and dashes are allowed.

Databases of domain records are maintained by InterNIC, the primary name registry on the Internet in the US, and by a variety of similar agencies throughout the world. Accessed through a utility program called WHOIS, these databases are easily accessed from throughout the Net. There's a list below of sites that provide a WHOIS "gateway" for queries of domain name databases from your Web browser.

(Incidentally, you may do well to remember that your own domain registration will become a publicly-available WHOIS record. For instance, perhaps you have a phone number or e-mail address you'd rather not share with literally the entire world...)

WHOIS Gateways
The following gateways vary, but generally, simply entering a domain name on the query form will yield a record for that name. Entering company names, individual names, e-mail addresses and other queries may also yield information. WHOIS provides a good way to investigate prospective names to determine which are already registered, and to find what companies or persons are associated with a domain name.

Do I Need a Domain Name?
That depends upon your purposes.

If you just want to put up a personal web page, you're probably better off simply placing that page with your current service provider. Practically all Internet dial-up accounts include a free web page. Your service provider can help you with the details.

If you're in business and wish to advertise your services on the Net, or provide information for clients, etc., it may still be simplest and most economical to set up the page(s) on an ordinary dial-up account. Unless your website is very large or will attract large numbers of users, this is usually OK, though you should check your service provider's terms of service.

The disadvantage of this inexpensive approach is that your site's address will carry your service provider's domain name, and probably won't be particularly memorable to your customers. If your account were jjones@serviceprovider.com, your web page address would look something like: http://www.serviceprovider.com/~jjones. For most people, that address is not easily remembered.

It is a marketing maxim that if you're advertising to the general public, it is vitally important to present a simple, memorable message. Web addresses are no exception to this. Thus a well-chosen domain name can be absolutely essential to your enterprise on the Internet.

How Do I Decide if It's Worthwhile?
For most, it's a simple enough decision.

If you're going into business on the Net in a serious way, and especially if you're advertising to the public, you need your own domain name.
If you intend to build a huge website, or one that is intended to attract hundreds or thousands of users every day, you will need your own domain name, and have it hosted by a provider whose facilities are up to the task.
If for any reason you need some particular, recognizable name as your site's address, the only means to do so is to own your own domain name.
Sometimes someone simply wants a vanity address, for e-mail and/or a personal web page. If you're totally determined to be hawkeyepierce@the-swamp.com (and no one else has registered the domain name), you can certainly do so, though at a much higher cost than an ordinary dial-up account.

It's all a matter of whether the expense (see below) is worth it to you.

What Does It Cost?
There are several costs involved in setting up a working domain.

InterNIC presently charges $100 for the first two years' registration of a new name, upon initial registration.

Most people use an Internet "Presence Provider" (IPP) to assist them to register and set up a domain name. Typically, these businesses will charge $50 to $100 for their assistance in registering a name with InterNIC.

Your IPP will then require a fee for hosting the name on their machines. Typical fees range from $30 to $60 per month for hosting services. Often there's a price break available if it's paid for a year or more in advance. Usually the service includes e-mail and Telnet access; and often other forms of service - such as a secure server for snoop-proof ordering and credit card information - will cost extra.

The creation and maintenance of a website is a wild variable, sometimes done at a fixed rate, but more often a professional Web developer or the IPP who hosts your site will charge an hourly fee ($75 per hour is not unusual). Or it may require no direct outlay at all if you produce your own Web material.

In the end, the costs above are merely a rough estimate, except for the InterNIC fee. Your own needs and choices will determine your cost. But it's fair to expect an initial investment of $500 or more to establish even the very simplest commercial site.

The AADN has no control over the services offered or prices charged by commercial concerns on the Net and for the present, we will refrain from making any specific recommendations on which IPP to use. Needs vary too widely for us to offer any really simple advice.
